I forgot, what was the point of Judson short term missions again?
Based on recent overheard dialogue the last few weeks it is not what I thought it used to be.
Or what I am told it is.
All I have heard recently is talk about how cool it would be to go to _______, and who is going where and why that would make it a fun trip, and how great of an experience it would be, and choices based on places of interest, and etc, and etc, and etc.
Everything is based on good times, fun people, great experiences, and interesting places.
Is serving God a part of short term missions anymore?
What about where He wants people to go?
What about serving people (people other than one’s self and one’s group)? Do the people of these countries matter at all, or are they just a means to an end of personal growth?
No doubt, faced with these questions anyone going would say it is all about God, and they want to go to this country because God put the desire in their heart, and the only intent is serve the people.
But what is the truth?
Would this not be evident in their dialogue leading up to the trip?
Should I not be hearing discussion of how great previous trips were based on the impact had, not based on how much fun and personal growth was had?
I will believe that is the intent when I hear it.
And all this vain, trivial, selfish talk disappears.
Perhaps personal conversation rather than sitting in on conversations would reveal different motivations.
But it should not take that
because as long as any of this talk exists, it is not about God.
As long as this talk exists intentions are revealed upfront.
If the intent was different, would teh talk not be different?
It has become completely social. Completely trendy. Completely selfish.
Completely wasteful – of our resources, our money, our energy.
There are people starving right here in Elgin, people unsaved right here in Elgin, social injustice right here in Elgin, and you want my money, my efforts so you can take a vacation for a week while claiming it is for God?
I did hear of one ‘Godly’ experience from one of the mission trips last year about serving other people.
That was one.
Let us get honest here.
If you want to take a vacation for a week to Kenya, or Costa Rica or wherever else, just say that. That is part of a different conversation.
If you want to serve God, His people, and shared the blessed knowledge of the Gospel to people who have not heard it, then do it. Though that too will bring up another conversation.
